After general dental consultation, there are 3 treatment modalities: to recognize the issues and provide either appropriate immediately treatment, appointment scheduling or referral to other specialists according to the needs of patient’s condition. Generally, the same dentist will perform a complete treatment course for the same individual patient in general dentistry service. Unlike those specialists who focus on a specific type of dental practice – periodontist, prosthodontist, endodontist, etc. – general dentists are primary care who offer a wide range of services.

Dental pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. The primary focus of endodontics is to perform the treatment on inflamed and painful pulp tissue, also known as root canal therapy (or commonly referred as “nerve pumping”, which is of course a misnomer). In additional to root canal treatment, endodontists also perform Endodontic surgery, such as apicoectomy (removal of the end, or tip, of a tooth’s root) to save many teeth that can’t be treated by root canal therapy. Periodontal disease is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support of the teeth.

Periodontitis always begins with inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis.

Left untreated, gingivitis may eventually lead to alveolar bone destructions and turns into periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. Often this happens without any obvious signs to alert you, but you might notice changes such as:

Orthodontics is the dentistry branch that addresses the diagnosis, prevention, interception, guidance, and correction of bad bites or dental irregularities, including the use of braces.

The goal of orthodontic care is to improve a patient's bite, which is associated with in the treatment of various malocclusions, buccal deformities and cleft lip and palate. Orthodontics specializes in early prevention and interventional correction for children, as well as for with adult of at any age, jawbone correction for children, combined orthodontic corrective surgery and pre-prosthetic correction for adult patients with cleft lip and palate.

One to two weeks after the regular checkup is completed, your doctor will communicate with you face-to-face to work together to define a course of treatment. Items Do Not Covered by Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI):

  • Crown Lengthening Procedure, CLP (NHI does not cover treatment prior to denture placement).
  • Non-traumatic orthodontic treatment.
  • Over-the-counter drugs, instruction drugs and oral care products.
  • Fees for patient’s transportation, registration, certified document copies, X-ray copies.
  • Dentures: crowns, bridges, post (abutment), removable dentures, artificial implants, etc.
  • Preventive Care: tooth cleaning training, pit and fissure sealants, anti-grinding braces, anti-snoring devices, fluoride application for kids over 5-year-old, etc.
  • The non-covered diagnostic drugs announced by the competent authority and the government-funded medical service items.
  • Antibiotic gels for periodontal disease, gels for the treatment of periodontitis, performing a periodontal surgical procedure due to cosmetic purpose, periodontal guided tissue regeneration surgery (including bone graft material and barrier membrane) and periodontal desensitization treatment, etc. are items not covered by NHI.
